ACE-Academic Support (AS)
ACE Tutoring Program
Tutoring provides TAMIU students with free academic support programs, such as one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, supplemental instruction (SI), presentations, and a variety of workshops (e.g., study skills and time management). Within these services, ACE Tutoring provides peer review, writing tutoring, and support for content areas (e.g., math, science, communication, etc.) and 24/7 online assistance through Tutor.com from Blackboard. Overall, ACE Tutoring offers students a supportive learning environment and tutoring approaches that focus on college learning strategies to ensure that all TAMIU students can develop a framework to guide their learning, take responsibility for their academic growth, and graduate in a timely manner. ACE Tutoring is in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library on the 1st floor, and it is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
ACE Learning Support Specialist (LSS) Program
Learning Support Specialists (LSS) provide academic support to students who are not yet considered college-ready. The LSS team is divided into two primary areas: Math and English. Math Learning Support Specialists assist students in College Algebra, Business Math I, Math for Liberal Arts I, and Introductory Statistics. English Learning Support Specialists provide support for English, Language Arts, and Reading coursework aligned with English Composition I learning outcomes. The goal of the LSS program is to help students achieve college readiness through individualized weekly support sessions designed to strengthen skills and improve performance in credit-bearing courses. LS Specialists also provide a variety of workshops to support content areas (e.g., Math Marathon, Write Here/Write Now, Write Track, etc.). ACE LSS support is in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library on the 1st floor, and it is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
ACE Mentor Program
The Student Mentor Program provides structured academic and transitional support to first-year students enrolled in FYE 1201/1302. The program is housed within the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) Department and is located on the 1st floor of the Sue and Radcliffe Killiam Library. Through required individual mentoring meetings conducted at designated points during the semester, Student Mentors assist students in navigating college expectations and promoting academic success and persistence. Mentoring topics include adjustment to university life, time management, study strategies, goal setting, academic planning, utilization of campus resources, and the development of professional and communication skills. Student Mentors also serve as a referral resource to appropriate academic and student support services in TAMIU. Students must complete mentoring meetings to earn 15% of the overall course grade. Credit is awarded based on attendance and fulfillment of program requirements. ACE Mentoring is in the Sue and Radcliffe Killam Library on the 1st floor, and it is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.
TRiO – (SSS)
The U.S. Department of Education funds the TRiO SSS program through a competitive grant. Participants must be first generation and/or economically disadvantaged or a student with a documented disability evidencing academic need. Students receive individualized structured support, such as tutoring, academic coaching and personal counseling to 1) maintain a GPA above 2.0, 2) persist at TAMIU, and 3) graduate within six years. The TRIO SSS Program is located in Zaffirini Success Center 222.
