INSTITUTIONAL MISSION

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) nurtures its students' academic and social development through instruction, research, and service to be responsible and productive members of our global society.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY

Established as an upper-level center in 1970, TAMIU has evolved into a four-year institution with authority to develop doctoral level programs. The University has operated as Texas A&I University at Laredo (1970-1976), Laredo State University (1977-1992), and, since 1993, as Texas A&M International University, a proud Member of The Texas A&M University System. In 2025, TAMIU launched its 55th Anniversary celebration, marking the largest enrollment in University history with more than 9,000 students, and announcing the appointment of  Dr. Christopher Maynard as the University’s seventh President by The Texas A&M Board of Regents.

LOCATION

As its name implies, TAMIU is an international University, poised at the Gateway to México and serving as the intellectual center of a vibrant learning community.

Laredo is located 156 miles south of San Antonio, 158 miles west of Corpus Christi, and 153 miles north of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México. Situated at a key crossroads of international business, Laredo has a rich history under seven flags. Its vibrant community and subtropical climate offer a welcoming environment and a high quality of life.

More than 255,000 people call Laredo home, making it one of the most populous cities in Texas according to the 2020 U.S. Census. The Río Grande winds between Laredo and its sister city, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, México. The combined population of the Laredo–Nuevo Laredo metropolitan area is approximately 636,000. Nuevo Laredo has its own rich culture, history, and traditions, proudly shared by the peoples of Los Dos Laredos.

ACCREDITATION AND MEMBERSHIP IN EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS

TAMIU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees. Texas A&M International University also may offer credentials such as certificates and diplomas at approved degree levels. The undergraduate and graduate programs in the A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business are accredited by AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The College of Education Educator Preparation Programs are accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification. Accreditation status is based on accountability standards as established by the Texas Education Agency.

The undergraduate and graduate programs in the Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences are accredited by the:

TAMIU School of Engineering programs (BS in Computer Engineering, BS in Systems Engineering, and BS in Petroleum Engineering) are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET (http://www.abet.org/).

The Master of Public Administration program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA).

TAMIU Teacher Preparation Programs are accredited by the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology (MACP) is accredited by the Master in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC).

TAMIU is a member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and the American Council on Education.
